NHRC issues notice in Monalisa Bhosale marriage case, seeks report over minor claim

The controversy surrounding the marriage of Monalisa Bhosale has intensified after the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took cognizance of the matter and issued a notice to the Khargone Superintendent of Police, seeking an Action Taken Report within seven days. The move comes amid allegations that the girl, who recently married Furman Khan in Kerala, may be a minor.

The case reached the commission following a complaint filed on March 27, which claimed that Monalisa, a resident of Maheshwar in Khargone district, is underage. The complaint cited a viral video from the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj, where she was reportedly seen selling rudraksha beads and stating her age to be around 16, raising serious concerns about the legality of the marriage.

The complaint has also alleged discrepancies in documents related to her age and called for a thorough investigation into possible coercion, fraud, or concealment of identity. Taking prima facie cognizance of a potential human rights violation, the commission has directed authorities to conduct a detailed probe and submit findings, including coordination among officials.

The complainant has further demanded that if Monalisa is found to be a minor, an FIR be registered under the POCSO Act and the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, along with measures to ensure her safety, counseling, and rehabilitation. Confirming receipt of the notice, Khargone SP Dr. Ravindra Verma said an investigation is underway and appropriate legal action will follow based on the findings.
